"A young man after God's own heart."

1977-1997

John Micheal McCain Smith was a young man who did make a difference. He loved the Lord and loved mission work no matter where he was.

John Micheal was not perfect. Ask anyone who had to listen to his corny jokes! He endured cruel harassment from his peers in middle school because he was different. In addition, he suffered with constant headaches from a rare brain tumor. In spite of all of this, John Micheal continued to quietly serve the Lord in his daily life. He did mission work with the Pendleton Street Baptist youth group; volunteered at the Children's Hospital; and was athletic trainer in all sports at Greenville High School. During his senior year, John received the "most valuable player" award from the football team, even though he never played one minute in any game.

John Micheal lived a Christian life and didn't realize how many lives he touched in the short time that he was here on earth. Through his Faith, he commanded the respecet of everyone that he met.

John Micheal died April 30, 1997 at the age of 20 and over 1500 young people and adults attended his funeral--proving that "one person can make a difference."

Because of John Micheal's commitment to serve the Lord and those around him, we have chosen to celebrate the impact of his life on others with the "John Micheal Smith Cross of Service."  Volunteer groups may choose to use this award for individual or group recognitions.  It is our prayer that this reminder of such an exceptional young man will inspire others to follow his example.
